Bathe in sewage for salvation

The famous Hindu city of Varanasi is situated on the murky banks of the Ganges. Hindus believe bathing in the river causes the forgiveness of sins and helps attain salvation.

[Below] Bodies are ceremonially cremated on the banks and swept into the river, which is believed to send their ashes to heaven.

An estimated 1 billion litres of untreated raw sewage pollutes the river every day. Also, inadequate cremation procedures contribute to a large number of partially burnt or unburnt corpses floating down the river, in addition to livestock corpses.
