[Above] My current journey, so far.
Leaving Home
My journey started on 13th March 2002, when I first left Australia. I had a two-year, Working-Holiday Visa for the United Kingdom and it was my intention to work and travel - as like so many other young Australians. By my second day I was working in a decent job in London.
In the Beginning
Using London as my base, I started traveling in my free time. At first it was a few days here and there, always with someone I knew. My traveling feet were still very wobbly. But over the next few years I developed a greater confidence with myself and my instincts as I began to overcome the constant challenges involved with travelling. And hence I began to grow.
Finding my Travel Feet
I became more adventurous. I travelled to the Middle East and Asia on my own - this time going for one and two months, respectively. I began to realise that the experience of extended travel offers a greater potential for growth and enlightenment. I had a plan, and so I had to work to make it feasible.
Getting the Resources
So in 2007 I worked. I worked hard. I didn't travel and I didn't take holidays. I simply worked and saved as much money as possible so that I could fulfil my desire to travel without the two most common limiting factors: time and money.
Current Trip – The Big One
On 29th April 2008 - after a brief visit to Australia - I started my current trip. I began by hitchhiking from Switzerland to Turkey, and then through Georgia and Armenia. After a brief return to Europe I began my trip around South America - a journey that for some reason I had been fearing. It would be a great personal challenge.
After beginning with some volunteer work in the north of Brazil I continued my clockwise circuit of this wonderful continent.
Experience and Growth
I can not even begin to explain how much I have evolved during the course of this trip. In the last six-months alone, I feel like my mind has opened and my senses have attained a clarity of never before.
I have seen great things, with my eyes open. I have met amazing people, with my heart open. I have experienced many good and bad things: moments where I wish I was somewhere else, and others where I have wanted to scream out with joy and happiness! Every experience, whether good or bad, has been important in shaping me.
The Road Ahead
My constantly evolving plan is currently as follows:
• Continue travelling clockwise around South America
• Through Central America to the United States of America
• Make my way from west to east (possibly driving)
• North to Canada
• Fly to the Middle East
• Travel across Asia
• Into China and Mongolia
• Through South Korea
• Across the water to Japan
• Fly back down to Australia.
